What community characteristics support the achievement of integrated area development objectives?

Abstract:
The success of the Integrated Area Development (IAD) program largely depends on the characteristics and participation of local communities living around forest management areas. Understanding these characteristics is essential to ensure the alignment of community needs with program objectives and to strengthen sustainable livelihood outcomes. This study aimed to analyze which community characteristics most strongly support the achievement of IAD objectives in the Forest Management Unit (KPH) Pesawaran, Lampung Province. The research was conducted from May to June 2025 using a quantitative descriptive approach with 30 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Correlation analysis revealed that age was significantly associated with gender and length of residence, suggesting that demographic stability contributes to community engagement in IAD activities. Moreover, income was correlated with education level and number of family dependents, indicating that socio-economic capacity influences the ability of households to participate in sustainable development initiatives. These findings highlight the importance of tailoring IAD implementation strategies to community demographic and socio-economic profiles to enhance program sustainability and forest conservation outcomes.
